Andrea Wassmer, GRASP Advisor for Powhatan High School, recently talked to economics students in Mr. Bell and Mrs. Detrick’s classes about FAFSA. Completing and submitting the FAFSA form is free, and it gives families access to the largest source of financial aid to help pay for college or trade school. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

Powhatan County Public Schools wishes to say thank you to all of those men and women who served in the U.S. Armed Forces, and a special thank you to all of our employees who served. We honor your sacrifice. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

After a resounding 5-0 quarterfinals victory on Tuesday, the Powhatan High School Girls’ Varsity Field Hockey team will compete in the Class 4 State Semi Finals at noon tomorrow. Flat Rock Elementary fifth graders recently had a visitor from the Mattaponi tribes in Ms. Korte’s room. The informative visitor is an aunt of a student in Ms. Amorese’s homeroom. The students enjoyed learning more about Native American life from her. She ended her presentation with a traditional dance she taught the students. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

Real Money. Real World. is a financial program that introduces a dose of real life to money management for our eighth graders. Virginia Cooperative Extension is seeking adults to assist students at each of the booths where they will "purchase" homes, vehicles, groceries and many other monthly needs. If you enjoy working with young people, please consider signing up to help us with this upcoming program at Powhatan Middle School on Monday, Nov 13. National STEM/STEAM Day is celebrated every year on Nov. 8 to encourage kids to explore their interests in science, technology, engineering, arts and math careers. On a recent third grade STEM Day at Pocahontas Elementary, students recently learned about the importance of soil by making observations of the soil components, testing the soil in the schoolyard to determine what it contained, and learning about vermiculture - composting with worms. They will use worms to compost their food scraps throughout the year. The day ended with them creating their own soil mixture to grow microgreens. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

Flat Rock Elementary math and reading interventionists are set up in the library during parent-teacher conferences today offering parent information for students in intervention. They are highlighting tools such as Kindergarten Fundations, All About Spelling, high interest texts to promote comprehension, Number Worlds, and Pearson Focus. The goal of these tools is to support literacy and math growth in our students. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

The smiles on the faces of students in Mrs. Hintz and Mrs. Hall’s kindergarten classes at Powhatan Elementary lit up the room as they learned and played under neon lights on “Glow Day.” As part of a Halloween Escape room using language and math skills, the students could earn “glow wear” – glow bracelets, pens, necklaces, glow glue, glow markers – when they completed a task. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

The students in the new elective class spent two weeks planning and creating the short films using stop motion technology, and then Mrs. Peyton held the film festival to debut them. The four films were posted individually last night. Here are the winners of the awards ceremony. #wearepcps #teampowhatan #elevateeducatorsva

During the week of Nov. 6-10, 2023, schools throughout the United States will celebrate National School Psychology Week (NSPW) to highlight the important work school psychologists and other educators do to help all students thrive. This year's theme is "Let's Grow Together," inspired by the importance of both personal and shared strengths in our growth as individuals and school communities in every season of life. The theme recognizes every aspect of growth, as fundamental to effective learning environments and to school psychologists' role in supporting student well-being and learning. Powhatan County Public Schools wants to honor our three school psychologists: Dianne White (PMS, PES); Kirsten Lightner (PocES/PHS); Katie Barnard (FRES/PHS). #wearepcps #teampowhatan

Mrs. Morin’s fourth graders at Pocahontas Elementary work on math word problems involving sorting and solving with the help of Mrs. Altizer and Mrs. Bernier. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

A group of Powhatan Middle School eighth graders recently went on a Mission Tomorrow Career Exploration field trip at Richmond Raceway (sponsored by Junior Achievement of Central VA and Chamber RVA). Mission Tomorrow, presented in partnership with Junior Achievement of Central VA, is the Richmond region’s interactive career exploration event for students. Through a series of interactive activities and discussions with over 100 area businesses, the region’s eighth graders – about 12,000 of them – can explore a wide variety of potential careers. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

Second graders in Mrs. Cheatham’s class at Powhatan Elementary worked on math stations where they had to make numbers add up to 10 while playing Go Fish, count money, use balancing scales, and make numbers four different ways. It’s wonderful to see these young mathematicians exploring math concepts in such a fun and engaging way. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

Mrs. Hazelwood’s Cosmetology 1 students at Powhatan High School have to learn the skeletal system because an understanding of it will help them to protect their own bodies by using proper body mechanics when they work. It can also help determine placement of makeup during application and influence haircutting and hair styling options according to their clients’ facial bone structure. But to make labeling the different parts of the skull a little more fun, they added color and made these beautiful creations. #wearepcps #teampowhatan #elevateeducatorsva

Third graders at Powhatan Elementary recently learned about the importance of soil by making observations of the soil components, testing the soil in the schoolyard to determine what it contained, and learning about vermiculture - composting with worms. They will use worms to compost their food scraps throughout the year. The day ended with them creating their own soil mixture to grow microgreens. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

A big thank you to the members of the Powhatan Middle School Positivity Patrol. The group was formed with the purpose of being present and more involved with their children and to be a positive influence on all middle schoolers. In doing this, they aim to show all Powhatan children that they have a community that supports and wants them to succeed! By having more adult presence in the school’s hallways, at restrooms, and in the lunchroom, they hope to assist in deterring negative behaviors. With volunteers stepping up to take on some of these monitoring roles it also allows teachers to focus on their class instruction and give more time back to their planning periods during the instructional day. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

The PHS Helpers recently served baked goods, snacks, and cider to a very enthusiastic group of staff and teachers. The group of over 300 parents was formed to support and encourage teachers and staff at PHS. The group has done lunches, snack carts, and special treats. PCPS appreciates all of our parent volunteers who take the time to be in our schools to help and show love and support to our students and staff! #wearepcps #teampowhatan

Across the division, students and staff were asked to wear orange on Oct. 18 for Unity Day, a day that aims to show unity for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion and to send a visible message that no child should ever experience bullying. A banner at the high school made by students promoted the event, and students were asked to sign the Kindness Acceptance and Inclusion Pledge during lunch. #wearepcps #teampowhatan
