Students Mr. Davis’s Algebra II class at Powhatan High School recently worked in groups to review polynomial operations and division through rotating stations. The lesson was designed by Ms. Angell, a senior at Longwood University who is completing her student teaching experience with Mr. Davis. She shared that engagement is a big focus for her, so the goal was to get students moving, talking, and collaborating with their group members while reinforcing key concepts. 🧡🖤

Mrs. Arnold’s French 1 and French 2 classes at Powhatan Middle School recently met in the library to choose their semester class books. With the help of Mrs. Smartschan, students previewed books written in English by French authors before voting on the book each class will read together this semester. To make the experience even more memorable, students enjoyed a croissant tasting while they explored their choices. 🥐 Each class will now dive into its selected book and complete related activities throughout the semester. 🧡🖤

Mrs. Hintz’s kindergarten class at Powhatan Elementary painted special drawings inspired by Alma Woodsey Thomas this week as part of their Black History Month observances. Alma Thomas was a teacher and artist who developed a powerful form of abstract painting late in life. From the mid-1960s, she produced brilliantly colored and richly patterned works intimately connected to the natural world. Her art was even displayed in the White House in 2015.

More than 175 Powhatan High School students recently had the opportunity to connect classroom learning to Virginia’s Civil Rights history.
During a Black History Month presentation, Leah Brown from the Robert Russa Moton Museum spoke about the 1951 Moton Student Strike, an effort led by 16-year-old Barbara Johns that contributed to the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision.
At the end of the presentation, members of Rho Kappa National History Honor Society and the Diverse Hands at Work club surprised Ms. Brown with a $1,000 donation to support the museum. Students raised the funds through events including a Pie the Teacher fundraiser, bake sales, a cookout, and this weekend’s dodgeball tournament. We are so proud of our students for their hard work and generosity. 🧡🖤

Last week, we got to experience part of Ms. Wood’s morning routine with her first-grade class at Flat Rock Elementary. Every day, the class starts the day with a favorite routine: Drop Everything and Read. 📚 Students come in, get settled, and choose something they’re excited to read. They even read alongside their small “desk pets,” adding a little extra fun to the routine. 🧡🖤 #WeArePCPS #TeamPowhatan

Students in Mrs. Senger’s kindergarten class at Pocahontas Elementary recently rotated through literacy stations to build foundational reading skills. After station time, the class came together for group reading, diving into a nonfiction story all about penguins. 🐧 They even practiced the cutest penguin waddle to get a feel for how the creatures move. 🧡🖤

100 DAYS OF LEARNING! It took a minute to get through all of the photos from the 100th day of school on Feb. 18, but hopefully it was worth the wait. Powhatan County Public Schools will open on a two-hour delay on Monday, February 23, 2026. Overnight snowfall has created slick parking lot and sidewalk conditions at the schools. The delay will allow additional time for school campus preparation to ensure safe travel for students and staff. Thank you for your patience and partnership as we prioritize safety.

Snow has begun falling in our area, and we are closely monitoring road conditions, forecasts, and guidance from local emergency management and transportation officials.
At this time, the division is planning to open on time on Monday, February 23. If we determine that a delayed opening is necessary, families and staff will be notified no later than 6:00 a.m.

Pocahontas Elementary has been showing the Olympics at lunch, and students are loving it. 🏅 There has been plenty of cheering, lots of questions about the “rules of curling,” and even a little speed skating practice happening between bites. 🧡🖤

At Flat Rock Elementary, snowmen take their careers very seriously. ❄️👮
One creative second grader designed a snowman police officer – complete with a flashlight, safety cone, and a humorous presentation to match. The attention to detail (and personality!) made it even better.
School Resource Officer Wright joined in the fun, playfully modeling what it looks like to be “drooling for donuts,” much to the class’s delight. It was a moment full of creativity, connection, and plenty of giggles. 🧡🖤

Pocahontas Elementary fifth graders recently created a beautiful koi pond installation inspired by Impressionism in Mrs. Williamson’s art class. After studying Monet and his work, students used papercrete to sculpt and mold their koi fish, focusing on form and dimension. They then practiced blending techniques with oil pastels to design water backgrounds and lily pads. Here you can see photos of Mrs. Yoder’s class working on the final step – bringing every piece together – and the final result of other classes’ work already on the wall. Don’t you love how each individual contribution plays an important role in creating something truly beautiful and special? 🧡🖤

Mrs. Thomas’s AP Chemistry class at Powhatan High School recently turned its focus to acid-base chemistry. As part of the unit, they completed a lab testing the pH of salt solutions and wrote the chemical equations that explain the pH results they observed. 🧡🖤

Students in Mr. Raychouni’s 7th grade ACCT class at Powhatan Middle recently spearheaded their own creative way to celebrate Black History Month. They asked if they could decorate their teacher’s door and chose to highlight Modern Black American icons. After researching, they created a display featuring trailblazers making an impact today, including several with Virginia ties. The project was led by one student who truly took the initiative and brought the vision to life. A great example of student leadership and creativity in action. 🧡🖤

Students in Mrs. Farrell’s Intro to Medical Health Science classes at Powhatan High School recently tried moulage – using makeup techniques to create realistic wounds and bruises as part of their study of the integumentary system (skin).
This hands-on activity helps students better understand different types of wounds and how they are treated. Some of the results were incredibly realistic, and it was wonderful to see the students fully engaged in the learning process. 🧡🖤

On Tuesday, Katlin McCreery, costumer for the Frontier Culture Museum, helped introduce Pocahontas Elementary fourth graders to their unit on the Civil War. Ms. McCreery talked about the peer pressures of succession, what was required to run an army (i.e. food, munitions, and clothing), and how everyday people like women and children were involved.

Mrs. Vallent’s Honors Biology students at Powhatan High School recently took a creative approach to studying the cell cycle.
As part of a project on mitosis and interphase, students created stop-motion videos to model and explain cell division. They had the freedom to represent the process in their own way, with some even composing original music to serve as the soundtrack for their films. 🧡🖤

Recently at Pocahontas Elementary, kindergarten students were strengthening their math skills – one card at a time. 🃏
In Mrs. Renaud’s class, students used a matching-style game to make the number three using different combinations of cards, building both memory and early addition skills.
Just down the hall, students in Miss Stimpson’s class worked on the same concept in a slightly different way, playing a “Go Fish”-style game to collect the cards they needed to create combinations of three.
Different approaches, same important learning – helping our youngest learners see how numbers can be put together in more than one way. 🧡🖤
