🎭 Innovation in Action Series: Spotlight #5 🎭 The Powhatan Education Foundation is proud to support projects that bring together creativity, skill-building, and real-world learning. Thanks to the Classroom Innovation Grants, over $15,000 helped bring eight incredible initiatives to life across Powhatan County Public Schools! 🔧✨ We will now turn the spotlight on the "Turning Tables: Bringing CWD and the Performing Arts Together Through Engineering and Stagecraft" project at Powhatan High School! Led by Powhatan Middle School teacher Bilal Z. Raychouni, this project united two departments—Career Workforce Development and Performing Arts—to create a 20-foot mechanical turntable for the PHS auditorium. The rotating stage piece, designed in collaboration with Creative Conners, Inc., allowed students to blend engineering with performance, providing hands-on learning in set design, construction, and stage technology. This innovative project debuted earlier this month in the amazing PHS production of “Hadestown,” adding a dynamic new element to the stage and giving Powhatan High School and Powhatan Middle School students valuable skills in both performance and technical design. 🌟 #wearepcps #teampowhatan

Powhatan High School seniors took a trip to Washington, D.C. for their Senior Trip earlier this month. They spent the day touring the National Mall, exploring museums, and taking in the sights of historical landmarks. The day ended with an exciting Nationals game! Powhatan Middle School's amazing student leadership group rolled out the red carpet for PCPS fifth graders earlier this semester. Over three days, the leadership students welcomed fifth graders from all three elementary schools and gave them the grand tour of PMS 🏫 — hitting all the highlights like the library, band and chorus rooms, gym, cafeteria, counseling office, and more. They even got to try some hands-on activities in the Innovation Lab. These visits are all about helping our future students feel confident and excited about making the jump to middle school. 🧡 #wearepcps #teampowhatan

🎶 Innovation in Action Series: Music Exploration 🎶 The Powhatan Education Foundation is proud to support creativity and innovation across our schools! In the fall, more than $15,000 in Classroom Innovation Grants were awarded to eight inspiring projects. During the last few weeks of school, we’re highlighting each one. Pocahontas Elementary music teacher Helena Nuckols used her grant funds to support an exciting new musical initiative: Orff Instrument Xylophone Exploration! This project centers around the Orff approach, a music education method that encourages creativity, exploration, and hands-on learning through instruments—specifically, the xylophone. The approach supports music education and helps reintroduce and reinforce key learning concepts throughout the year—making music an engaging and accessible part of every student’s education. 👏🎵 #wearepcps #teampowhatan

Goochland Powhatan Community Services just wrapped up an awesome Developmental Services Awareness Day event. This special program highlighted services and resources available to individuals with developmental disabilities and families of infants and toddlers in need of support in our community. PCPS was proud to be one of several organizations with a table at the event sharing information about their services. And to top the day off, the consumers of Monacan Services Day Support put on an amazing Talent Show from start to finish full of singing, dancing and comedy. We were thrilled to see several PCPS alumni onstage as well. Yesterday was Water Wednesday at Flat Rock Elementary! 💧🌿 Helpers from a class providing students community-based instruction did an awesome job making sure the plants around campus got the care they need. Each week, they take turns watering and checking in on the greenery—and they take their job seriously! ⚖️ Innovation in Action Series: Spotlight #3 ⚖️ We’re thrilled to continue highlighting this year’s Powhatan Education Foundation Classroom Innovation Grant recipients—where creative teaching meets real-world learning. Thanks to our community’s support, PEF was able to award over $15,000 to bring eight innovative projects to life across Powhatan County Public Schools! 🔍 Step into the courtroom (and the crime scene!) at Powhatan High School with “From Crime Scene to Courtroom!” Educators Cheri Ashman and Amanda Wilson Henderson teamed up to create an unforgettable, cross-curricular experience for students in Forensic Science and Practical Law. With support from their grant, students are now able to simulate a full criminal investigation and courtroom trial—from analyzing evidence at a mock crime scene to arguing their case before a “judge.” This immersive project doesn’t just bring textbooks to life—it cultivates collaboration, sharpens critical thinking, and highlights how science and law work hand-in-hand in the justice system. Order in the (classroom) court! 👩‍⚖️🧬🔎 #wearepcps #teampowhatan

Mrs. Simon’s second graders at Powhatan Elementary had a fantastic time becoming mini entrepreneurs! Their challenge? Create 10 products using just paper, glue, string, and tape. But the assignment didn’t stop there. Students also came up with catchy store names, clever slogans, and even made commercials to promote their goods. Each student got $10 to “shop” with their classmates, and the creativity was off the charts! It was a fun way to bring economic concepts to life in the classroom. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

🎓 On Monday, Powhatan High School hosted an inspiring Advanced College Academy (ACA) Symposium with some great full-circle moments. Our current ACA seniors, who graduate TODAY with their associate’s degrees from Reynolds Community College (yes, college degrees before high school diplomas 👏), got to hear from ACA alumni who were once in their shoes. From neuroscience to architecture, artificial intelligence to land management — the career paths of our ACA grads are as diverse as they are impressive. 💼🌍 Guest speaker Aviaé Gibson, a member of the very first ACA class in 2018, tuned in by video chat to share how the program laid the foundation for her journey. Other alumni from classes between 2018 and 2024 offered real talk on time management, mental health, college life, internships, and everything in between. Also, a huge thank you to the family members who attended and assisted with the medal ceremony. This eighth graduating class has worked hard through honors, AP, and dual enrollment courses — earning 60+ college credits at minimal cost to families and setting themselves up for success in college and beyond. We are so proud of your accomplishments and hope you enjoy your college graduation ceremony today before walking the stage next week at PHS! 🎓🎉#wearepcps #teampowhatan
