The Powhatan ES fabulous fifth graders will be performing along with our wonderful middle school band and choir members. We will have a Veteran Speaker, and JROTC cadets will be there to present the colors of the flag. Our main focus will be to celebrate past and current members of our Armed Forces for Veterans Day through a variety of patriotic songs and special tributes. Visitors must bring photo ID and check in at the front office.
It's film festival time! Mrs. Peyton’s Introduction to Film class at Powhatan High School recently held its own Stop Motion Film Festival and Awards Ceremony, where a panel of judges was asked to award honors in several categories to four different films made by students in the class. The students in the new elective class spent two weeks planning and creating the short films using stop motion technology, and then Mrs. Peyton held the film festival to debut them. The four films were posted individually last night. During the week of Nov. 6-10, 2023, schools throughout the United States will celebrate National School Psychology Week (NSPW) to highlight the important work school psychologists and other educators do to help all students thrive. This year's theme is "Let's Grow Together," inspired by the importance of both personal and shared strengths in our growth as individuals and school communities in every season of life. The theme recognizes every aspect of growth, as fundamental to effective learning environments and to school psychologists' role in supporting student well-being and learning. Mrs. Hazelwood’s Cosmetology 1 students at Powhatan High School have to learn the skeletal system because an understanding of it will help them to protect their own bodies by using proper body mechanics when they work. It can also help determine placement of makeup during application and influence haircutting and hair styling options according to their clients’ facial bone structure. The PHS Helpers recently served baked goods, snacks, and cider to a very enthusiastic group of staff and teachers. The group of over 300 parents was formed to support and encourage teachers and staff at PHS. The group has done lunches, snack carts, and special treats. PCPS appreciates all of our parent volunteers who take the time to be in our schools to help and show love and support to our students and staff! #wearepcps #teampowhatan

Across the division, students and staff were asked to wear orange on Oct. 18 for Unity Day, a day that aims to show unity for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion and to send a visible message that no child should ever experience bullying. The Emerging Leaders group at Powhatan High School recently conceived of and presented to district and school leaders a thoughtful way they want to have an impact at their school. The group is creating the Indian Inventory, which will be a supply closet that can provide PHS students with essential needs necessary for meeting academic success. The students researched the project to see how and why it should operate; interviewed key stakeholders to find out the greatest needs among their peers; problem solved to plan for potential issues; strategized how to fundraise and work with local businesses, community groups, and local leaders to build relationships aimed at keeping the closet stocked; created plans to promote the closet; designed a way for students in need to access supplies discretely; and began to make plans about how to make the closet sustainable. We need to catch up on a recognition we missed. Mr. Payne’s Electricity 2 student, Bradley Wade, placed fifth out of 25 at the SkillsUSA State Fair Electricity Competition held Sept. 26. We are thrilled to welcome Ronald “Ron” Henley Jr., who will assume the role of Director of Transportation, effective November 1. With a wealth of experience in the field and a deep commitment to ensuring the safety and efficiency of our students’ daily commutes, Henley is poised to drive our transportation services to new heights. In his new role, Henley will oversee the daily operations, strategic planning, and continued improvement of our transportation department. In addition to the safety and well-being of the school division’s students and staff, the transportation facility is responsible for the care and maintenance of the county fleet of vehicles, which includes the Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office and Fire and Rescue vehicles. Henley brings a proven track record of excellence in transportation management, most recently serving as the Assistant Director of Transportation and Maintenance for New Kent County Public Schools. His vision and dedication align with our division’s commitment to providing safe, reliable, and cost-effective transportation solutions for the PCPS community. In addition to his leadership role in New Kent County, Henley has built an impressive career in logistics and transportation management. He served as the Fleet Manager for Curtis Contracting Inc. in West Point, Virginia and as the Fleet Manager for the County of York in Yorktown, Virginia. A proud veteran, Henley also served as a Logistics Officer with the United States Army, serving our nation for an amazing 26 years. Henley earned a Bachelor of Science in Professional Aeronautics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and a Master of Science in Logistics Management from the Florida Institute of Technology. Superintendent Beth Teigen said she is energized by Henley’s vision to streamline the transportation department’s processes and improve efficiency through the use of technology. “I am also excited to hear Mr. Henley’s plan for strengthening the relationship between transportation and maintenance to optimize the productivity of the department,” she said. Henley said: “I am extremely excited about the opportunity to serve the students, staff, and families of PCPS. I believe my extensive background in logistics and leadership will help PCPS transportation to continue on its current glidepath of a more efficient, safe, and cost-effective organization.” PCPS eagerly anticipates the positive impact Henley will make, and we are excited about the future of transportation services under his expert guidance.
Last Thursday, ecology students from Powhatan High School had the opportunity to explore the Robins Nature Center at Maymont, a 29,000-square-foot attraction that holds close to 30,000 gallons of aquaria showcasing animals of the James River and Chesapeake Bay. During their visit, the students delved into the fascinating world of Virginia's native wildlife and gained insights into the intricate dynamics of ecosystems. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

Mrs. Farrell and Mrs. Lambert recently taught the seniors in the Nurse Aide Program at Powhatan High School how to administer CPR so they could be CPR certified. The certification is required both by the Board of Nursing and so the seniors can start their first clinical rotations. The program, which is part of the division’s Career and Workforce Development offerings, sends the students to work in units with patients. “If something were to happen, it’s very important that the students know how to respond correctly and accordingly,” Mrs. Farrell said. “Of course, they’re students so the staff would quickly take over, but they need to know how to respond. Also, just out in the community being good citizens. Every year, we have students in this program that volunteer with the Rescue Squad. And this training is required for all of that.” This class is a state-accredited nurse aide course and meets all course requirements necessary for students to receive their CNA certificate. “If they pass the State Boards they are fully certified, and, honestly, they are instantly employable as nurse aides,” she added. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

Powhatan County Public Schools kicks off its Let’s Pull Together Tab Collection today. Now through Dec. 11, bring your aluminum pull tabs to your child’s school. The tabs will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Richmond, which provides a "home away from home" for families traveling to the Richmond area while their children receive medical treatment in local hospitals.
