💻 Innovation in Action Series: Spotlight #7 – Real-World Coding in the Library 💻
The Powhatan Education Foundation’s Classroom Innovation Grants are helping students turn curiosity into creativity—and that’s exactly what’s been happening at Pocahontas Elementary School, thanks to librarian Tiffany Ray!
Through her project, Real-World Coding in the Library, students in grades 3–5 have been diving into authentic JavaScript coding using Bitsbox, a web-based platform that works right on their school-issued Chromebooks. No extra devices needed—just imagination and a willingness to learn!
Students build their own interactive apps inspired by topics they’ve researched or stories explored during Library Resource Class 📚💡. With each “coding recipe,” they’re learning essential skills like variables, coordinates, loops, and functions, while also gaining confidence in debugging and creative problem-solving. The best part? These projects are open-ended—designed to grow with each student. From games and drawing tools to stories and simulations, every creation becomes a launchpad for more learning and innovation. The program was on display at this year’s STEM Expo for all children to try as well. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

🎉 The countdown is officially on! 🎒✨

🕙 PHS – 10:45 a.m.
🕛 All Elementary Schools – 12:00 p.m.
Let’s finish the year strong, PCPS! Have a great summer! ☀️📚🎈 #wearepcps #teampowhatan

💬 Innovation in Action Series: Spotlight #6 – Kimochis: Let’s Make Feelings Better Together! 💬
Thanks to support from the Powhatan Education Foundation, another incredible Classroom Innovation Grant is helping students grow—not just academically, but emotionally.
This spotlight features the Kimochis Educational Program, a hands-on, playful approach to building emotional intelligence through interactive learning. “Kimochi” means feelings in Japanese, and that’s exactly what this project centers on—helping students develop a rich emotional vocabulary and learn how to express their feelings in healthy, constructive ways. 🧠 🧡
Using soft “feeling pillows” as therapeutic tools, students engage in meaningful activities that promote self-awareness, communication, empathy, and resilience. These lessons are rooted in child development research and social-emotional learning best practices. 👏 Special thanks to Kirsten Lightner, Dianne White, Jennifer Lavimodiere, and Taileah Rich for bringing this powerful resource to PCPS, with plans to expand to all schools. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

Powhatan Elementary held its annual Teachers vs. Fifth Graders Kickball Game on Tuesday, and plenty of laughs were had by all! 😄 The teachers may have taken home the win this year 🏆, but the real victory was all the fun, teamwork, and school spirit on the field. Way to go, fifth graders—you gave it your all! 👏💪 Until next year! #wearepcps #teampowhatan

🎭 Innovation in Action Series: Spotlight #5 🎭
The Powhatan Education Foundation is proud to support projects that bring together creativity, skill-building, and real-world learning. Thanks to the Classroom Innovation Grants, over $15,000 helped bring eight incredible initiatives to life across Powhatan County Public Schools!
🔧✨ We will now turn the spotlight on the "Turning Tables: Bringing CWD and the Performing Arts Together Through Engineering and Stagecraft" project at Powhatan High School!
Led by Powhatan Middle School teacher Bilal Z. Raychouni, this project united two departments—Career Workforce Development and Performing Arts—to create a 20-foot mechanical turntable for the PHS auditorium. The rotating stage piece, designed in collaboration with Creative Conners, Inc., allowed students to blend engineering with performance, providing hands-on learning in set design, construction, and stage technology.
This innovative project debuted earlier this month in the amazing PHS production of “Hadestown,” adding a dynamic new element to the stage and giving Powhatan High School and Powhatan Middle School students valuable skills in both performance and technical design. 🌟 #wearepcps #teampowhatan

🎶 Innovation in Action Series: Music Exploration 🎶
The Powhatan Education Foundation is proud to support creativity and innovation across our schools! In the fall, more than $15,000 in Classroom Innovation Grants were awarded to eight inspiring projects. During the last few weeks of school, we’re highlighting each one. Pocahontas Elementary music teacher Helena Nuckols used her grant funds to support an exciting new musical initiative: Orff Instrument Xylophone Exploration! This project centers around the Orff approach, a music education method that encourages creativity, exploration, and hands-on learning through instruments—specifically, the xylophone. The approach supports music education and helps reintroduce and reinforce key learning concepts throughout the year—making music an engaging and accessible part of every student’s education. 👏🎵 #wearepcps #teampowhatan

☀️ School may be out after next week, but the fun (and learning!) won’t stop! Powhatan County Public Schools is hosting enrichment and athletic summer camps this June and July 2025 — and there's something for everyone! Goochland Powhatan Community Services just wrapped up an awesome Developmental Services Awareness Day event. This special program highlighted services and resources available to individuals with developmental disabilities and families of infants and toddlers in need of support in our community. PCPS was proud to be one of several organizations with a table at the event sharing information about their services. And to top the day off, the consumers of Monacan Services Day Support put on an amazing Talent Show from start to finish full of singing, dancing and comedy. We were thrilled to see several PCPS alumni onstage as well. ⚖️ Innovation in Action Series: Spotlight #3 ⚖️
We’re thrilled to continue highlighting this year’s Powhatan Education Foundation Classroom Innovation Grant recipients—where creative teaching meets real-world learning. Thanks to our community’s support, PEF was able to award over $15,000 to bring eight innovative projects to life across Powhatan County Public Schools!
🔍 Step into the courtroom (and the crime scene!) at Powhatan High School with “From Crime Scene to Courtroom!” Educators Cheri Ashman and Amanda Wilson Henderson teamed up to create an unforgettable, cross-curricular experience for students in Forensic Science and Practical Law. With support from their grant, students are now able to simulate a full criminal investigation and courtroom trial—from analyzing evidence at a mock crime scene to arguing their case before a “judge.”
This immersive project doesn’t just bring textbooks to life—it cultivates collaboration, sharpens critical thinking, and highlights how science and law work hand-in-hand in the justice system. Order in the (classroom) court! 👩⚖️🧬🔎 #wearepcps #teampowhatan

📡 Say hello to POCA Pulse News at Pocahontas Elementary School!
Thanks to grant recipients Principal Samantha Martin and school counselor Zannatul Ferdous, POCA is giving students an amazing opportunity to be a virtual news team. Fifth graders step up as anchors, delivering daily announcements that connect the school community, highlight events, and build confidence through real-world communication and tech skills. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

Mrs. Simon’s second graders at Powhatan Elementary had a fantastic time becoming mini entrepreneurs! Their challenge? Create 10 products using just paper, glue, string, and tape. But the assignment didn’t stop there. Students also came up with catchy store names, clever slogans, and even made commercials to promote their goods. Each student got $10 to “shop” with their classmates, and the creativity was off the charts! It was a fun way to bring economic concepts to life in the classroom. #wearepcps #teampowhatan
