Quick Updates:

If your student is walking off property after school for any reason, we need written permission from the parents. Students who do not have written permission to walk to places such as the YMCA or Fighting Creek Park will not be allowed. Students will also not be allowed to walk on Old Buckingham Road when leaving property either.
As we enter the final stretch, attendance is even more important. Please continue to support your student(s) by showing them how we finish strong in a school year even when we have our eyes on Summer. We are starting to review for final assessments and SOLs, so attendance is key to get all the important lessons. Please continue to use our proper parent line for picking up and dropping off students. All cars should enter via Powhatan Elementary and follow the road. We are working daily to be as efficient as possible, and cars that cut through or drop students off in various lots undermine the process.
A rise in illnesses related to the cold and flu season is upon us. Please review the school's exclusion policies. It is also recommended that student's not return to school until they are 24 hours fever free without medication and are free from vomiting/diarrhea for 24 hrs.
Outside food from restaurants may not be dropped off for students during the school day. Additionally, while students are permitted to carry a water bottle, only water may be consumed in classrooms.
School Property - We are seeing a rise in some students pushing boundaries and damaging school property, bathrooms, and chromebooks. Please work with your student to remind them that any damage to PCPS property can result in consequences as outlined in our PCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities. We ask our students to be Safe, Respectful, and Responsible at all times.

On May 6th, the PCPS School Board received information about updates to the Student Rights and Responsibilities for the 25-26 school year. Please review the presentation and draft document.
If you would like to provide feedback, please complete the survey below by May 30th, in advance of the June 24th School Board meeting.

8th Grade Dance - Message from PTO

Please see all of the links that you need below. PLEASE add your students name in the add a note for the seller box on the tickets link. Tickets will be sold until Wednesday, May 14th. Reminder that this event is being held on Friday, May 16th from 6 to 8pm. Your student's name will be added to the master list that we will have at the doors. They will not be getting a physical ticket for this event. You must sign the permission slip in order for your child to attend. Thank you! We are ecstatic to celebrate the class of 2029! It takes a village and the PTO certainly has the best village so please consider coming to help or sending in a goodie.

School Start Times - 2025-2026 School Year

As you may have heard, the school day is going to be extended by 10 minutes next school year. The school hours for Powhatan Middle School will be the following:
- Drop Off Begins: 7:20 a.m.
- School Starts: 7:35 a.m.
- Dismissal: 2:25 p.m.
Also, a reminder that the first day of school, Monday, August 18th, will be just for 6th grade students. (All staff will still report on the first day of school.)

Literacy Resources for Families

Powhatan County Public Schools encourages families to explore the valuable literacy resources available through the Virginia Department of Education. These tools are designed to support student learning and success both in the classroom and at home.
Be sure to visit the "Family Supports for Reading" section in the VDOE Resource Hub, which includes helpful strategies, tips, and fun activities to strengthen reading skills and inspire a love of reading at home.
By working together, we can give every student the tools they need to grow as confident, capable readers.

Rising 7th Grade Immunizations

Per Virginia State Law, all rising 7th grade students must have received their Tdap vaccination and their Meningitis Conjugate vaccination before entering their 7th grade school year. (Please note that this is a state requirement.) Any student not receiving these vaccines and providing our school with documentation will not be allowed to attend school until proof of compliance is provided. Also, it is recommended by the Commonwealth of Virginia that students entering the 7th grade to have their Human Papillomavirus Vaccine as well.
Please see the VDH link in your email for Immunization Requirements for all K-12 students. Please make arrangements to have your student properly vaccinated and provide our school clinic with an updated immunization report as soon as possible so we can update their records to a compliant status before the 2025-2026 school year.

Parents still need to order pictures? Strawbridge’s NEW Code Lookup Tool is now available. Parents can simply scan the QR code and follow the directions to access their child's picture ordering gallery. No need to contact Strawbridge Customer Service for an access code! Student last name and Student ID number will be required for data security.
